What Is Antipsychiatry?

Psychiatrist Thomas Szasz wrote a whole book lambasting antipsychiatry. The book is entitled Antipsychiatry: Quackery Squared. Ironically, Szasz was often labeled as being an “antipsychiatrist”, even though he vehemently rejected the label. Szasz rejected the label of being antipsychiatry mostly because, according to him, a significant number of antipsychiatrists still embraced psychiatric coercion and nonconsensual psychiatry.

I believe we can redefine antipsychiatry as meaning being against psychiatric coercion and nonconsensual psychiatry. If we define antipsychiatry as such, then I identify as being part of the antipsychiatry movement. If antipsychiatry is some mystical mysterious idea that still embraces psychiatric coercion, then I, like Szasz, reject the label of antipsychiatry.
